As the Professional Society that serves the Osteopathic Medical profession in New York State, NYSOMS depends upon membership support to promote member concerns and monitor legislative activity in Albany, work with the insurance industry to ensure  fair reimbursement, and provide CME programs that keep members current on best practices. To be successful we need the support of the entire Osteopathic community. It is only with your support that NYSOMS can continue to reach for new heights in providing more and improved benefits for each of our members and in the promotion of the Osteopathic profession, while successfully advocating in Albany for our members and their patients.

Please note for tax purposes that the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society (NYSOMS) membership dues may be deductible as a business expense. NYSOMS estimates that 20% of your membership dues is used for the NYSOMS’ lobbying activities and is therefore not deductible for income tax purposes. 

Membership Categories

Regular Membership. $300/year

Active membership is available to a Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) who graduated from a COCA accredited osteopathic college, holds an unrestricted active license and registration to practice medicine or surgery in New York State, and reside or maintain an active practice in New York State.

Active Members have both voice and vote and can hold office in NYSOMS. 

First Year In Practice Active Membership - $100/year

This membership is available for one year only and is reserved for DOs that are in their first year of practice and meet the above criteria. Members have both voice and vote and can hold office in NYSOMS.

Second Year in Practice Active Membership - $200/year

This membership is available for one year only and reserved for DOs that are in their second year of practice and meet the above criteria. Members have both voice and vote and can hold office in NYSOMS.

Associate Membership. $50/year

Associate Membership may be granted to an individual who meets one of the following: 

  • Teaching, research, administrative or executive employees of COCA accredited osteopathic colleges or affiliated hospitals or healthcare facilities.
  • Administrative or clinical employees of Members of NYSOMS.
  • A DO with a license in good standing in this state.  

Members at this level are eligible to serve as committee members with voice, but no vote, and may not hold executive positions in the Society.

Federally Employed Physician Membership. $200/year

 Those in this membership category shall be voting members, as granted by the Membership Committee and approved by the Board of Directors. 

Retired / Inactive membership.  Dues Waived

Any osteopathic physician who has been engaged in practice in New York State and has retired or taken a hiatus from practice may, at the discretion of the Board of Directors, be accorded the status of inactive membership.  The member shall be entitled to all the rights, privileges and benefits of the Society except those of voting, holding office or being represented in the House of Delegates. Inquire for more details

Life Membership.  Dues Waived

Any active member who has reached the age of seventy-five years, and who was an active full paid member of the Society for 20 years, may be given Life Membership at the discretion of the Board of Directors.  The member shall be entitled to all the rights, privileges, and benefits of a regular active membership. Inquire for more details

Postgraduate (fellow/ resident / intern) Membership.  Dues Waived

Membership may be granted to graduates of COCA accredited osteopathic colleges who are in AOA and/or ACGME accredited postgraduate training programs and are current or former residents of NY. 

Members in this category are granted all privileges of membership except voting at the Annual or Special meeting of the Society. A Postgraduate member may hold a position on the Board of Directors as the Postgraduate Representative.

Also eligible for consideration for Postgraduate membership shall be those holding the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and serving under fellowship grants, preceptor ships, or other advanced study or teaching programs.

Student membership.   Dues Waived

Student Membership may be granted to students at COCA accredited osteopathic colleges.  Student Members are not liable for dues and may attend annual and other general meetings. . Members under this category cannot hold office in the Society and have no voting priviledges except through their Representative to the Board of Directors.
